Spiceworks 4.5 around the corner..

Anyone who has visited the site before will know from previous posts that I am a huge fan of Spiceworks. For those who have not heard of it yet, Spiceworks is a free inventory and asset management solution with an integrated help desk platform.
I will take a few moments to really step through how this product has changed my job and helped me advance my IT career. The time that the system has saved me both in routing requests through a ticket system and the time saved in researching solutions all in one place has really made a difference. The community is very active, more so than any I have visted in the past. It has become one of my first stops for technical research and resources for ideas to solve new problems that come up. Within the community, there are also experts and representatives from the top tech vendors out there to help point you in the right direction with software or vendor specific questions. That alone is worth the time it takes to register. Then factor in the fact that you will have all of your scan-able assets organized and probed for all of its relative information on hand and ready to go when you need it; there should be no question to whether or not you install it in your network.
It’s newest release, 4.5 promises to be one of the bigger releases in the last year and a half or so. As a frequent visitor of the support forums, I have seen so many requests for what is included in this upcoming release including:
- Scan scheduling for larger networks, along with other reliability improvements for the use in large networks
- SSL/HTTPS Support
- Help desk ticket queue customizations and custom views
- Editable network map
- Improved SQL server monitoring
- Performance increases when using the application with Internet Explorer
The thing that hits home with me is the out of the box support for SSL/HTTPS. Working in an environment that is sensitive to HIPPA, it is nice to see this addition so I can feel comfortable opening up my install to the web to work easier from remote location. This really opens the doors for MSP’s or companies with remote workers who use the help desk installation to manage work orders from their clients, who can now access the web interface securely. The knowledge that this community brings to the table has proved to be one of the most valuable tools that we never even paid for.

Thanks so much for the great coverage Steve. I’ll be sure to Tweet this come Monday morning (when more people are online after they “recover” from the Thanksgiving holiday!)
In the meantime, I’d like to let you and your readers know that the 4th release of the 4.5 Beta is now available. You can get more information about the Beta and how to download it here – http://community.spiceworks.com/topic/82849. Any questions or feedback? Feel free to email me at jasons [at] spiceworks [dot] com.
